Well, it is Super Bowl time and I bought a new TV. I was planning on waiting until later this year, but Sony is discontinuing their rear projection HDTVs and I wanted to get one before they were all gone.
From the reviews I have read, the 60A3000 has a picture that is just a notch below the Pioneer PDP-6010FD that costs 2 to 3 times as much! For that reason, I decided to go ahead and buy now. Also, I wanted a 1080p monitor for all of the 1080p sources I have in my “home theater”.
Once I had the TV delivered, I noticed that the colors were overdone because my Sony was in “vivid” mode. Not sure what that mode is for, but it was way, way too saturated. Fortunately, I was able to dig up this article on some settings I could start with. After using those settings, the Television’s picture quality was fantastic. I am still going to tweak it with my Avia DVD, but I think I am real close to perfection right now.
I watched “Smokin’ Aces” that I recorded on Cinemax HD and the colors were great and the detail was fantastic. The movie was nothing to write home about, but I was very impressed buy the detail and performance of the television.
The only downside with the switch from my Samsung 61 inch TV is that I cannot use the Omnimounts for my center channel, PS3, and Roku. I have read that the TV has a problem with anything over 5-10 pounds mounted on top of it. Now I need a new stand. For now, I had to put my VCR and Monster power cleaner on the floor next to my current stand and that is not going to work for the future.
Anyway, if you are in the market for a 60 inch HDTV with a great picture, you may want to jump on the bandwagon now!
